RESPONSES TO READINGS
From Art House to Microcinema:
So I've read these articles before, but it's been a year, so it's time for a refresher! Something that struck me about this article, especially after having experienced the entirely of Visions last year, is seeing how similar we really are to the ideal type of micro-cinema that Alvin describes - we show very unorthodox films in an environment where, otherwise, these films would never be seen. It's honestly really cool to think about this fact, and then to think about the two groups it affects most: on one hand, it's really great for artists, whether they can attend screenings of their own films or not, to be able to share their creations with a wider audience. On the other hand, however, it's this same audience that gets the better end of the deal, in my opinion. They get to experience something they don't get to experience on a day-to-day basis; as was said in the article, they'd have really insane discussions about art that were intelligent. This building of a community is what's most important, and I think that ties in perfectly to Visions, which is all about finding connections with people that we'd otherwise never meet.
Festivals of Their Own:
Ah, yes, the reading of the creation of an underground Sundance that got so big that it, like, totally wasn't underground anymore, bro. Not hipster anymore. Something that struck me this time as opposed to the last time I read it was the part where they discussed who got into the chain of festivals that were created alongside Slamdance - Slamdunk would get what Slamdance didn't accept, which got what Sundance wouldn't accept. Something about this is fascinating; it's interesting to think about the fact that even if a film submitted didn't make it into Sundance, it could end up going down the chain into a more underground, more personal type of film festival, which could end up helping the filmmaker along the way to create something that could go up a tier in the festival circuit (although, this doesn't mean they get better at filmmaker, simply better at making a different type of film).
